AEO vs GEO: Are They the Same Thing?
AEO and GEO are nearly the same discipline described with different emphasis. Both optimize businesses and content to appear in AI-generated answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) frames the goal as becoming the answer. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) frames it as optimizing for generative engines and their citations. The underlying work is the same.
Why two terms exist
New disciplines often get named more than once before the market settles on a winner. AEO grew out of the SEO community reframing the goal around answer engines. GEO grew out of research studying how to improve a source's visibility inside generative responses. Both took hold around the same time, and neither has fully won. You will also see AI SEO, LLM SEO, LLMO, and AI visibility used for the same thing.
The practical stance
Do not spend energy debating which label is correct. Spend it owning all of them in your content and keyword targeting, because your buyers are split. Some search GEO, some search AEO, most search neither and describe the outcome instead. A resource page that defines both terms, explains that they describe the same work, and uses the surrounding vocabulary naturally will get cited when a model resolves any of those queries, because you become the source that clarifies the confusion.
If forced to draw a line
The only meaningful distinction: AEO leans toward the outcome (be the answer) and reads better to business owners; GEO leans toward the mechanism (optimize for generative engines) and reads better to technical and academic audiences. For a med spa deciding where to invest, the distinction changes nothing about the work.
